Principles of Marketing

Trademark (Logo)

(Individual work)

What is a trademark

A trademark can be any word, sign, symbol or graphic that you apply to your company, goods or services to distinguish them from those of your competitors; for example, a brand, product or company name, or logo. The trademark serves as a badge of origin for your business and its brands and products, and can consist of words, logos, images, slogans, shapes and colours, or a combination of all of these.

Words and pictures are the most common forms of trademark, but other distinguishing signs can be registered, so long as they are capable of being represented graphically. For example, designs have successfully been protected as trademarks, as have colours, family names, and even smells and sounds.

Trademarks are valuable business assets, as a valid trademark right will enable its owner to prevent others from copying or otherwise taking advantage of the goodwill in the owner’s brand or company name. In cases of copying or infringement, unregistered trademarks offer limited protection, which is why it is generally recommended to register trademark rights at the relevant national or regional trademark office. A registered trademark needs to be renewed at regular periods (generally every 10 years) to keep it in force.

Logo

Logo is on the most important element for any product/services, event, projectand etc. It is the face for the subject matter that is to be delivered to the audience. Other than just that, my logo ideation was made by referencing the 5 good logo design principles which is simplicity, versatile, appropriate, memorable and timeless.

Focusing on my project of promoting the plantation system in Mantin, my subject matter is the orchards in Mantin which it is called dusun in Malay. Regarding on this, my title for the promote purpose is Dusoon. The title sounds more to Malay word and physically it shows an English word in it. The combination of two language is to merge the understanding of the project and the use the National language which is Bahasa Malaysia (BM).

Moving on to the design of the logo, I would like use typeface and icon as my logo. This is because to be more memorable and versatile according to my topic.
This is how my logo process:

1) I started make a D letter using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. To ensure the shape of the letter, i used the direct selection tool to drag the points to fit the shape of it. (screen shot 1)

2) Then, my idea is to place icons that would be easier for audience to recognise the subject of my project. So, i created the icon of a rake hold by the capital D. It is to involve the props that usually a farmer or an orchard keeper use during work. Other than that, i have used my Character 'Ah Soon' in the logo to make use of the character of my project. 3) Then I add text to complete the title ‘Dusoon’, for the text, I tried to use so many type of font, the perfect one was the Viner Hand ITC font:  Dusoon  (Screenshot 5-8)
