Design Systems and Services,

App Interface

App interface is an important layout that will explain about the app on how does it work and it's speciality. This will need a good and proper designed interface so that it works and makes audiences to be easily understand. For my 'Friddal' app, it is based on an app that can be connected via other social media apps. It is about using images of our self or from our gallery by manipulating it into a fractal image and sharing it in the other social medias. This will allow others to give feedback and an opportunity for the user to collect points that can be redeemed with some food and beverages and spa services in selected franchise company.

Below is the process of designing interface for my App:

An I-phone Shape was use to represent a mobile phone for the interface.

Title of my App

'Friddal'

Fridden is a word from Luxembourg that means about peace. The concept peace were selected for my app is to solve depression and tensed feel in people in their daily life.

Other than that my logo is a simplified form just using typeface(font) for the logo. After trying to make few type of logos digitally, the typeface logo was the best way to make my app stand among other app logos. The font that is used for this typeface is Harlow Solid Italic. Besides, other social media apps and logos showed in a very simplified way by considering the five logo principles. Moreover, the logo design progress were guided by the module leader by consultations and tips on how to make the logo more interesting.

Colour for the app logo is Blue. The reason of blue as the colour for the app logo is due to the friendly colour and my previous research (previous blog post) says that blue is very significant colour for social media, besides, blue is a colour that brings peacefullness and calm feel internally.

Wireframe

Wireframe is a table or flow chart that shows the process in simplified form. This is an outline or guideline for the system designer. Other than that, it will be a reference table for the investors or other superior if we work for a programming company. Wireframe is a reference for the designer in a way to avoid the design er to be leftover or skipped over the important features and part of the design system. This method are used in all the programming and system designing companies. For my App called 'Friddal' below is the wireframe in a very simple form;

Development of Idea

After going through few search about colours and how it changes expressions, the app that I wanted to design is about connecting the other social media. This is due the current civilisation is more on their social media platforms in updating all kind of status.

As read …’ social media has proved immensely popular in Malaysia, where mainstream media is owned and tightly controlled by the government or parties from the ruling coalition. Malaysians use Facebook, Twitter and other platforms to discuss the situation in their country, share stories from the media and chat with friends….
                                                                                                (Al Jazeera/internet media)

In this case, my development on the system designing is to create an app that is connected with social media for a good purpose that is a solution to reduce stress and to increase relaxation without any obstacles and negative changes on daily commitment.
The idea for my app is to use colours, shapes, images and technology to make people stress free. The app will have features and programming from all the other social media as Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Wechat, Line and many other social media apps.

Reflection:
This is a point for me to use it as how can I move on to bring it into my app and its system. Besides, it showed that how much that people use their social media platform for all kind of uses.

Week 4

Paint Colors that Relieve Stress and Help You Relax and How your home's interior can make your stressful day seem less overwhelming.

……In a world that's moving faster than we can keep up with, it's important to find time to slow down, sit back, and relax. If you're constantly on the go—getting everyone out the door in the morning, dropping the kids off at school, working late, picking up the dry cleaning, grocery shopping, cleaning, taking the dog to the vet, getting your workout in, and cooking dinner for the family—then you're probably longing for at least 10 minute a day to relax. The good news is you won't have to travel far (although a beach vacation would be nice) to take a breather. You can do it in the comfort of your own home.
How? By choosing paint colors that are proven to boost your mood. Although there are only three primary colors, we use various mixtures to create millions of additional shades. And if you know what to look for, some of these hues can help you relax. Read on for 20 colors that will make your long and stressful day seem less overwhelming.

Blue is a very soothing color that helps calm our mind and reduces tension. It’s often used in bedrooms because of its ability to help people sleep. Choosing the right blue need to make sure that it’s soft, neutral, and restful.

The color violet stems from blue and when done right, it can bring inner balance and peace to our soul. Never choose a hue that’s going to seem too drab (has too much black in it) because it will create a cold environment.

Pink is another color that helps calm and bring peace into a room. In fact, Feng Shui believers use pink to soothe the energy in a room and keep it understated. Although pink is considered a feminine color that’s best in a baby girl’s nursery, the right tones of pink can look beautiful in just about any room.

Symbolizes nature. Green is very visually soothing and therefore allows to stay calm and refreshed. We often find ourselves most relaxed when sitting in a park or on our front porch because we’re surrounded by nature’s most beautiful colors. Bringing those colors inside could keep that same serenity in our home.

We think of grey as dull, boring, and maybe a little depressing. But the truth is grey can provide a very soothing and cooling presence. It’s also a very neutral color, it works well with all of our furnishings and art work that we currently own. The best part about grey paint is that it can be used in a variety of rooms; the kitchen, the living room, the den, the office, a bedroom, etc…..

(Rebecca Soskin)

reflection:

other than just knowing that colours can change mind or in the other way around, i understand that this article and the author strongly agree about the environmental colour is related to the presence of mind. This shows that it is supportive to my topic which is about colour as therapy.

According to my topic of colour as therapy, a proper literature or a statement should be referred or studied. My understanding with previous search, it conclude that some colours play and generate different feeling. In addition, it depends on the colour that they witness.
Now, for the study that I carrying on, how could colour can be used for therapy? And how can colour change the mind perception (stress/depress/relaxed)?

…..People tend to pick different colors to describe different moods, according to research published Feb. 8, 2010 in the journal BMC Medical Research Methodology….

….The colors we use to describe emotions may be more useful than you think, according to new research.
The study found that people with depression or anxiety were more likely to associate their mood with the color grey, while happier people preferred yellow. The results, which are detailed today in the journal BMC Medical Research Methodology, could help doctors gauge the moods of children and other patients who have trouble communicating verbally.
"This is a way of measuring anxiety and depression which gets away from the use of language," study co-author and gastroenterologist Peter Whorwell of University Hospital South Manchester told Live Science. "What is very interesting is that this might actually be a better way of capturing the patient's mood than questions."
Colors are often used as metaphors for moods, but no one had systematically researched color associations, Whorwell said. To investigate, he and his colleagues picked eight colors — red, orange, green, purple, blue, yellow, pink and brown — and split each into four shades. They then added white, black and four shades of gray for a total of 38 options. After meeting with focus groups, the researchers decided to display the colors in the form of a wheel.
Next, they recruited 105 healthy adults, 110 anxious adults and 108 depressed adults and mailed them printouts of the color wheel. Each person was asked to pick their favorite color, as well as the color they were most "drawn to." Finally, they were asked to pick a color that described their day-to-day mood over the last several months. Another group of 204 healthy volunteers classified each color as positive, negative or neutral.
Whether depressed, anxious or healthy, people liked blue and yellow. Blue 28 on the color wheel was the most popular favorite color among healthy people, while Blue 27 (which is a little darker than 28) got first place among people with anxiety and depression. Meanwhile, Yellow 14 was picked as the color most likely to catch the eye.
But when it came to mood, the groups diverged. Only 39 percent of healthy people associated their mood with a color at all. Of those who did, Yellow 14 was the most popular choice, with about 20 percent of the votes. Meanwhile, about 30 percent of people with anxiety picked a shade of grey, as did more than half of depressed volunteers. In comparison, healthy volunteers described their mood with a shade of grey only about 10 percent of the time.
The researchers also found that when assigning a mood to colors, saturation matters.
"A light blue is not associated with a poor mood, but a dark blue is," Whorwell said. "The shade of color is more important than the color itself."…..
(Stephanie Pappas about Peter Whorwell statement/study)

Reflection:
From this study of Peter Whorwell, I understand that every people have their different passionate colour of their own mind. The colours changes mood and the depression state of a person because the proportion of their mind accepting the colour. Other than that, it is a natural phenomenon of our brains to reflect upon different colours. Moreover, this statement shows that how state of mind are measured with colours and the different mood.

Design Systems and Services

Based on my study regarding onto the topic of colour, there are some important sites and facts were referred (experimentation/ research). There are some important facts that squeezed out some important facts that were are relevant to my topic.

Color in History
In ancient history, color was appreciated not for its abstract beauty or aesthetic appeal, but for the divine symbolism ascribed to it by various ancient religions. For example, ancient Egyptian magicians wore blue breastplates to represent the sacredness of their wisdom, and in ancient Greek poetry colors such as scarlet and purple were worn to represent the violent encounter in The Iliad and Ulysses wanderings in The Odyssey. Color and colored light has even been used in some cultures to heal various physical and mental ailments.

Color, Mind, and Body
Today, colors are not imbued with quite as much meaning. People choose colors for their clothes and homes based on their personal preference, rather than the meaning behind the colors. However, different colors have different effects on both the body and mind.

Red, Pink, Orange, and Yellow
In China, red is a color of celebration and luck, and it features largely in many important ceremonies. In India, red is used in wedding clothes to symbolize the purity of the people being married. Despite the significance and widespread use of red in cultural events around the globe, scientists have found that looking at the color red can actually initiate the body's fight-or-flight response, speeding up the heart rate and raising blood pressure. Red's stimulant properties make it a poor choice for relaxation, but it is great for a burst of energy and passion.
The color pink shares the stimulating properties of red and also inspires increased motivation and confidence. Interestingly, some holding cells in prisons are pink, which is supposed to reduce the inmates' erratic behaviour. Orange is also a stimulating color that increases social behaviour and stimulates both appetite and activity level. Yellow has been shown to increase communication and heighten memory while stimulating the mind.
These warm shades may be great for a party setting, but they do not lend themselves well to tranquillity or peaceful contemplation, so they are not the best colors for relaxation.

Blue
Perhaps it's no coincidence that the color of both the sky and the ocean has proven to be a calming color. Humans have long enjoyed the blissfulness of cloudless blue days by visiting the beach and staring at the seemingly endless ocean. Blue has a calming, sedative effect, and can actually cause the body to become cooler. Some also say that the color blue aids intuition. Blue rooms are generally very relaxing, and the same peacefulness can be evoked by looking at a painting or photograph with a lot of blue. In a pinch, even a piece of blue paper can provide instant stress relief.

Green
Green is said to lessen depression, anxiety, and nervousness. It relaxes both body and mind, and is both soothing and refreshing. The cool green of a summer forest is the perfect place for a relaxing walk, and the sight of a leafy tree dripping rain can be the highlight of a rainy day. Green is a great color for walls or clothing, and green wall art or room accessories can add a tranquil note to any room.

Purple
Purple is unique in that it is a mix of both red and blue. It can either be stimulating like red or soothing like blue, depending on the shade and undertone. Purple has traditionally been the color of royalty, as it used to be very expensive to buy purple fabric. Lavender and periwinkle are both relaxing colors, but deep purples tend to be more stimulating than soothing.

The Best Colors for Relaxation
Warm colors are usually stimulating and not the best for a calm and relaxing environment. Blues, greens, and purples are the most relaxing colors, and they have a soothing effect on both the mind and the body. That makes these the best colors for stress-relieving environments, and the best choice for peaceful and quiet décor and clothing……
                                                                                                                             (Myrrh Hector)

According to statement from a study from Mr.Myrrh Hector, I understand that colors are a factor that can stimulate multi feelings and thoughts for a human. Other than just that, it shows that different type of color plays different type of role in changing mind and mood.
Relating this to my topic, I would like to see how colors can be used as therapy in our daily life.

Trip to Kuala Lumpur Art Galleries

A Trip to KL

A trip were conducted to Kuala Lumpur in week 4 (17 March 2016), it is to visit the museum and art galleries in the city of Kuala Lumpur. This will help us to understand the techniques of how galleries are presented and managed. Additionally, it improves personal skills such as observing, documenting, photographing, interpreting and etc.

First of all, the national Museum was the place of visitation in this trip. This particular place is well managed and divided in sections according to the artifacts in it. Some of the ancients-life artifacts are replicated and some not. Each artifact were given a short explanation that tells story/explains about it. Other than that, the exhibit methodologies especially about the lightning were applied to highlight the specific art to visualize it clearly to audience. This gives a special effect on the artifact but depending to the direction of the lights were given to the subject.

Next was to the National art Gallery. Here, most of the arts were placed independently as it has different perspective and message (not in group/section). Every angle of the lighting was well applied to show the art appropriately to the audience to observe. As was in the national museum, the arts was given specialized lights to give special effects and for better visualization. What are the most significant things was type of artifact that is exhibited level by level. On the first floor, all were paintings and few sculptures on the second floor, majority was sculptures and minority on paintings.

Moving on to the 3rd place of visitation, Petronas Art Gallery at Suria KLCC, Petronas Twin Tower. This is a gallery where majority artwork was installation art and sculpture, while at the minority was paintings. In this particular space of exhibition, most of the artworks are about emotions and things that involve living style and state of mind.

At the end of this trip, I felt confident in myself of how to observe and understand arts. This is due to self-interpretation on every single artwork and its space. Previously, a trip were held for the module Museum, Gallery and Heritages. It was a trip where I had not much experience about interpretation and observing things. Now, since practicing on exhibition especially when exploring about it, this helped me a lot to see and analysis things in every single point.

Requirement of module/ task:

Develop systems and methodologies for solving real-world, pragmatic design problems. Self-motivated projects strengthen individual processes and problem solving capabilities. This will need to identify an area of research and discuss its relationship into graphic design. (designer as author) Need to address any social, political, linguistic, philosophical and cultural issues through an independent, self-authored graphic design project that requires experimentation, adaptability and specialisation. Developing a refined, intelligent, professional body of work is required.

In this case of requirement, I would like to choose colour for my topic. As what I have been questioning myself, I would like to see how colour works in our daily life as in mentally, physically and geographically.

My understanding of colour based on my topic.

Colour can work as an interaction key for the terms of a specific topic/ occasion is held. Other than that, it can be classified for the communication method. This is said because, in daily life and in public occasions, we surely see many signs and direction tools which has different colours. This is basically indicating that colour speaks supportively for the subject that is selected to be shown.
Moving on more to my concern, I would like to see how can colour work towards people mentally/ which clearly to say; how the environment with colours effect mental?

Proposal

Proposal of topic selected.

According to the topic that is selected to be developed in this module, a formal proposal need to be prepared as a referencing document of what is the topic is about. This will also explain the objective and aim of the project in simplified form. My topic is about Colour as therapy, it is about making a booth for the ones who is feeling stress/ depressed. hopefully this will help the society to be much better psychologically and to be benefit for me to achieve the aims that i want to.

This is a image of my proposal in Pdf format:

screen capture of My proposal.

This is my Proposal (word) :

Statement of problem

Depression or stress is a main problem which occurs especially from the age 25-44 and least common for those over the age of 65. In children, clinical depression affects girls and boys at about the same rate. Within an entire lifetime, major depression will affect 10%-25% of women and 5%-12% of men. At any one point in time, 5%-9% of women and 2%-3% of men are likely to be clinically depressed. Although major depression can occur at any age, the average age for developing the illness seems to be in a person's mi 20's. However, the average age of onset of the condition appears to be decreasing. Those with a parent or sibling who has had major depression may be 1.5 to 3 times more likely to develop the condition than those who do not. This is due to the daily struggle and task which they are responsible of. This effects the physic and psychology of a person directly and indirectly.

Aim
To reduce the state of hypertension or depression by using colours as therapy in changing their mood, feeling, state of mind reflectivity and etc. Additionally, increasing the interactivity of psychology with colours and the reflection of colour as therapy.

Objective
  • ·         Identifying emotions using colours
  • ·         Use colours to change emotion
  • ·         Determine type of colours that effects on emotions
  • ·         Creating new colours depending psychology to divert emotions

Proposal of experiment/solution.
Using colours and features by preparing a space for audience to feel the colour interactivity and how it reflects them with expression and changes of feeling. Use of some colours with several mixture of colours by the use of colour spectrum and family. This will allow them to explore more on relationship between colours and emotion. Hence, colour as a therapy effectiveness can be measured the thoroughly.

Design Systems and Services

What is System?

1.   A set of detailed methods, procedures and routines created to carry out a specific activity, perform a duty, or solve a problem.

2.   An organized, purposeful structure that consists of interrelated and interdependent elements (components, entities, factors, members, parts etc.). These elements continually influence one another (directly or indirectly) to maintain their activity and the existence of the system, in order to achieve the goal of the system.
All systems have inputs, outputs and feedback mechanisms, maintain an internal steady-state (called homeostasis) despite a changing external environment, display properties that are different than the whole (called emergent properties) but are not possessed by any of the individual elements, and have boundaries that are usually defined by the system observer.

Systems

The first matter to be considered in a research is to observe and analyse the systems. A thorough analysis and observation on the area selected is important to know the systems. There are so many things around which contain systems depend on what scope it is looked.

This is my understanding about system:

·         Basic Principles:

-Everything is connected to everything else
-You cannot eliminate the observer
-Most truths are relative
-Most views are complementary

·         Defining Systems:

-Elements of a system description
-Example systems
-Purposefulness, openness, hardness

·         Describing systems:

-Choosing a boundary
-Describing behaviour
