Museum Gallery and Heritage Studies

Reflection:

At the end of this module, I understand that what is the whole concept of museum, gallery, and heritage. All three scopes are related to each other so that the determination on a matter will be more effective and experimenting the world of heritage more deeper in more wider. In this module, i learnt how to demonstrate the filed of museum, galleries and heritage. First of all, experiencing and witnessing a situation or environment is the most important thing in understanding heritage, and it clearly done in this module. Cultural issues are well understood due to the unlimited cultural and heritage.

More over, i have learnt to use metaphor in presenting in Installation art. The experience of creating awareness of culture and heritages which is left over are covered in this module.

For this module:

How would you inspire your peers about your work?
For this module, the most important part on understanding culture and heritage is the experience itself that will allow us to interpret on what we are about to do. Experiencing the museum, galleries, and cultural places (heritage).

How would you transfer the knowledge between modules?

This is our installation art about Hakka Village, as i posted earlier, i add on more about this work. At this installation art, we included an object that is brought from Hakka Village, it is to show something that is abandon too. Then, there is a pot of flower is place to show that, there are still hope and beauty in Hakka Village. We are highlighting that a village such as Hakka Village should not be just left over.

Museum Gallery and Heritage Studies,

Circuit of Culture

In a group discussion, we planned to replicate the well as a semi well and place it in our installation.
The background of our installation art is a closed surface.

So, a large scale of carpet is used to cover the background from spoiling our installation projection.
Then, some trashes were brought over to throw it around the floor as how it was in Hakka Village. After that, we spread dried soil onto the floor to make it look dusty and old, and some water sprayed to it. Adding on some coconut shells as trash. A broken umbrella was helpful for us.

Moving on next part, we hung a chair, a light bulb and a rubbish. The chair was broken but still manageable to make it a platform to sit. What we wanted to say here is, even if something is broken, it can still help and useful for us. The reason why rubbish were hung, is to show that no appreciation towards mother nature and especially the environment there. For the bulb, it says that the facilities are given but it has no use for the people there in Hakka Village.

For the background projection, we manage to manipulate all the images that we have taken. The photo manipulation of the image result were vintage style of photos then it is applied to a video format. Here, the help of Adobe Premier was good to edit the images into video. The images were shown from angle to angle in different rotation and scale.

Other than that, we snapped a picture of one member, then manipulated the image as a shadow of a person standing. This were applied to the video too. This is to show that in previous life during the Hakka Village were full of people, there might someone taking water from the well. That is the main reason of  placing the shadow beside the well.

This is the image :

Circuit of Culture

After a deep discussion about Hakka village, a visit to Hakka village were planned and we all in a group with the assist of our module leader went and experienced ourselves about what we can see there in Hakka Village.

As it is said left over, it is abandoned too. We witnessed thoroughly the environment in Hakka village.
This is how Hakka Village is:

The houses here are left over until the vein can brow on top reaching the roof.

The burnt part is because of an incident where Hakka Village caught fire in the late 90's. other than that, the wooden walls from most of the house are rotten.

The environment of this Village is very creepy because of the silence and it is totally abandon.

Every part of the house in this village can be seen as never been well taken care.

From this visit, we all decide to make an installation art of Culture by highlighting that the village is abandoned. Our concept here is abandoned.

Other than that every single house in this village has their natural water resources, it is the well. Each house has a well in it. This has become an idea for us to apply this to our installation art.

Circuit of Culture

For this task we were required to discuss a something about culture in group. Then, plan an Installation art based on culture.

After discussion with our module leader, we have picked a place to talk about culture. It is the Hakka Village which is place in the middle part of Mantin.

Hakka Village

Hakka means, a member of a people of southeastern China and the dialect that they speak. Almost 130 years ago, a huge number of people were brought into Mantin by the British. They were the southeastern Chinese which is called Hakka people. The reason they were brought here in Mantin is to work in the tin mining areas. They selected a place nearby the mining area and build a village for their own accommodation. When the British left, they stayed where they were placed. Till now, they are there. The speciality of this village is the culture and the ways of the houses are build. A peaceful village it was. But few years ago the land were sold and came in a private developer for the reason of constructing a shop lot. Most of the family which is the blood line of the previous generations were chased out from some part of the village due to demolish the village. This lovely village is a place where should be preserved.

Using this village which is not well preserved and taken care, this village are selected to be applied as installation art of it's Culture.

Curatorial Issue - Gallery Visitation

The third gallery for our visit is the Segaris Art Gallery.

This art gallery is a place where so many types of art is exhibited. There were, paintings, carving, and installation art. This art space had some works by institution students. This gallery doesn't have a specific concept but the most interesting is painting of people and their feeling.

These are some evidence of witnessing artworks in Segaris Gallery :

This artwork is a painting of feeling of a child that never want to be left over. This was painted on canvas and the medium used is wet on wet.

This is artwork of carved wood. This Artwork were made of different ways of carving. Carved using drills to make texture then carving knife and lastly, some varnish on top it to make it look bold.

This is a work which is made of lens and some mechanical parts of machinery.

This two images are crisis of money and happiness in life. It is to show feeling of human during in an helpless situation.

Review:

In Segaris Art Gallery, all the artwork were placed well and given perfect lighting so that the images can show up the details such as the depth of colours and to create shadow senses during observation. Space management were very good and the works are segregated according to the medium.

Some of the painting in this gallery is about Baba Nyonya which was an ethnic influenced by the mix of different culture with traditional culture Malays in Malaysia.

Review :
As in this gallery, it's a space to show or exhibit very significant art about culture. This art space is well organised especially on the lighting that had set up so that the painting can be shown very deeply clear. Every single art was segregated and placed properly on the wall.

Curatorial Issues

After a great discussion about curatorial issue, very good understanding on curatorial issues were acknowledged. Then a visit to few art gallery in Publika were planned and organised.
We planned 3 galleries to be visited. The reason why there were 3 galleries to be visited is to see and compare the differences of each galleries with another. The journey was just about 50 min.

This are the three galleries we visited for studies:

1. Chandan Art Gallery
2. Interpr8 Art Gallery
3. Segaris Art Gallery

This are the evidences that I have captured in Chandan Art Gallery as images.

This art is a oil paint on canvas. Detailed lines on canvas are also involved in this painting.

This artworks is about political crisis.

This art work shows the endangered life of human.

This art here is to show the Identity crisis. This painting is painted on flat surface which is not either canvas or any type of fabric. This painting were painted on different layers and then assembled to make a finished art and placed in a Photo Frame.

Review : This gallery is a place where sections are divided according to different crisis. It has Political, identity, relationship and feeling sections. Those sections in this gallery, are well prepared and organised with the exhibit of suitable painting and artwork for display.

Curatorial Issue

A curator is a person who is a part of any gallery. They are one who is responsible for all the works in art gallery. A huge contribution of hard work, time expenditure, energy, and dedication is one who we call a curator.

What is the role of a Curator in a Gallery?

A curator's duty is to organise well on space, lighting, distance, background, music (if needed) and most of the important element that the displayable art need.

Characteristic of a Curator.

Discipline - managing self and profession based ethics
Dedicated - manipulating environment or engagement of mind and thoughts according a subject
Flexible - accepting all type of curatorial situation
Communication - a person who can really speak with no fear and no irrelevant wise of information.

Being a curator is not just standing in a place and giving explanation on a specific work. The responsible is huge and depending on the count of works that they have to work on.

PAINTING
(Knowing better about Painting)

Other than just focusing on museums, galleries and heritages, paintings are also seems to be focused in our module especially to be helpful in future. Me and my peers visited SUHU Artspace to see painting and the medium of the painting.

Years ago, a research  before painting will be carried out as how we work now, the artist have to snap pictures, then scanning which is all done with no help of advanced tools. This might take some time for them to produce the outcome. Since so many advanced tools are exist, the old method is no more. Besides the previous research is like some waste of important element in the world(paper). Now, we snap a pictures, then evaluating the contrast, determining the textures and some important works are all in a mobile phone. So, it seems to be easier for us to start a painting. Other than mobile phones, computer of course will be handy for us to do all this important things but with the help of some app/ software.

Canvas is the first thing need to prepared if we are o start a painting. Painting on canvas is not compulsory, we can also paint on a sheet of any type of fabric or a big piece of paper. The quality are depend of the type of material selected to be painted on. Then, selecting the size of the frame is also important and the frame should be perfect shape so that we don't struggle due to imbalance during the process. For canvas matter, we can buy it at the art stationary or we can just make our own canvas if possible. Usually we can find three types of canvas which is absorbent canvas, oil canvas, and the universal canvas. These three canvases are different in their use. The absorbent canvas is mainly for tempera colors, oil canvas is for oil painting and the universal canvas is either for acrylic or oil paint (might be ok with all type of paint).

*the information were from Dr. Hushnaidi bin Abdul Hamid in SUHU Artspace

At the SUHU Artspace, there were some student's artwork too. It was Nando's , it's title. This practical student artwork was about a chicken and it's productivity which is egg.  The artwork is about food and the main menu list is the chicken, so he placed a crown on the chicken's head and he printed some 3D eggs and attached them to his artwork. There goes the productivity message for Nando's.

Task 1

Introduction to Museum, Gallery and Heritage.

Visitation to Museum

As last 2 weeks ago, we went through and understood about the concepts and the theories of Museum, Gallery and Heritage.

Next, for the module Museum, Gallery and Heritage, we are supposed to plan a visit to a museum in Kuala Lumpur where at the same time a requirement of research about a basic concept of Museum and Gallery.
On 12th March 2015, as in the brief, we planned and visited two Museums on a same day. First was the National Museum of Malaysia, then the second one is the International Islamic Museum. In this module's task, Mr. Hushnaidi led us as well as we pick information from both Museums.

As in Individual, the requirement after the visitation is to speak and write about a selected artifact of my own and share some of my opinion to see what i have understood about it.

1) In national Museum, I saw the artifacts of Orang Asli of Malaysia and what the tradition based things that they had used on ancient time. Moreover, the artifacts in another part of the Natinal museum is about the early age lifestyle and the tradition of Orang Melayu in Malaysia. Other than that, proofs such as potteries and skeletons from different age are also exhibited.

Below are some of the photographs taken in National Museum of Malaysia;

This is the mask of spiritual which the native's belief that a person who wears it will be obsessed with the power of it's spirit.

This is a small boat which is made of a log and there is small ancient time fishing rod. This are the main two things taken to the river for fishing.

These are the pieces of pottery in very early age in Stone Age.

This is carved stone of a God. The icon in the carved stone is a God who represent dance as a art.

These are some different type of stones found and It is the remains of Stone Age.

From the Tradition Museum of Malaysia which is a part of the National Museum of Malaysia, Harimau Berantai seems to be interesting for me to go through. As I see this Harimau Berantai as a spiritual believe because Harimau Berantai is a strong Guardian of a specific area of accommodation.

The chain that is being hanged is to show the bravery of this specific guardian spirit. According to the facts given, tribe which is named Mah Meri is the followers of this Harimau Berantai.  On that time, a tiger were selected as the spiritual icon is because the muscular predator which is strong enough to protect itself from danger. This clearly shows that Harimau Berantai were praised as their ultimate guardian.

Both museums are very neatly showing the most important wealth of civilisation and the meaningful life that have been survived by those people in early age of life. Other than that, I had clearly understood about the concept of a museum here by witnessing how the artifacts should be placed in a museum and how the environment should be settled.

Introduction to Museum, Gallery and Heritage.

Visitation to Museum

In the International Islamic Museum, what I saw was about artifacts relating to Islamic and the growth of it according different part of the world. Artifacts in this museum are something that we never seen before in my life. The most unique artifacts are the Mosques of Islamic in different type of architecture according to the country and the followers.

These are the mosque which is in different culture and dynasty.

These are the Islamic ancient household stuffs.

This is the box where pens or a quill for writing are used to be kept inside.

On the second place of visit, it was the International Islamic Museum. Here, what seems to be one interesting artifact is The Mini Al-Quran. This mini Al-Quran is being used mostly by the soldier who stays away from their house. This is to bring a self-confident in themselves and to be much braver. All this Al-Qurans are mostly from Kashmir.

The most interesting part of this Mini Al-Quran is the various size of it, which is in a size as same a human thumb. Specific magnifying glass need to be used to read the Quran. This shows that the miniature writing technology exist since a long time ago. The perfection in this is very important other than patience and will power on Islamic believe.

Both museums are very neatly showing the most important wealth of civilisation and the meaningful life that have been survived by those people in early age of life. Other than that, I had clearly understood about the concept of a museum here by witnessing how the artifacts should be placed in a museum and how the environment should be settled.
